What is a darudere?
Darudere (ダルデレ) is one of the dere types anime fans use to describe how a character behaves around someone they like. Where a deredere gushes and a tsundere snaps, a darudere mostly shrugs. They skip effort whenever they can, answer in as few words as possible and often look half asleep — but a low battery is not the same as not caring.
What makes the archetype work is the contrast. The same character who refuses to lift a finger for chores or school events will step up without hesitation when a friend is in trouble. Darudere characters are often the calm anchor of a chaotic cast: unbothered by drama, hard to provoke and surprisingly dependable once it actually counts.
Key Darudere traits
Low energy
They conserve effort, nap whenever possible and avoid anything that looks like unnecessary work.
Seemingly indifferent
Shrugs, flat replies and a "whatever" attitude hide how much they actually notice.
Few words
Conversations are short and dry; a full sentence from a darudere usually means something.
Unshakably calm
Panic and drama rarely reach them, which makes them steady in a crisis.
Quietly loyal
They rarely say it, but they stick with their people and show up when it matters.
Dry humor
Their deadpan comments and blunt honesty are often the funniest lines in a scene.
How a darudere shows affection
A darudere almost never makes grand romantic gestures. Affection shows up in small, low-effort ways: staying a little longer than necessary, remembering a detail you mentioned once, handing you the umbrella without a word or letting you fall asleep on their shoulder.
The real tell is effort. Because a darudere guards their energy so carefully, choosing to spend it on someone is their version of a love letter. When a famously lazy character gets up early, runs somewhere or takes on extra work for you, that is the "dere" finally showing.
