What is a tsundere?
Tsundere (ツンデレ) is the best-known dere type and the one many people have heard of even outside anime fandom. A tsundere switches between two modes: "tsun", the sharp, defensive exterior, and "dere", the affectionate side they try very hard to hide. The comedy and the drama both come from the gap between what they say and what they clearly feel.
Pride is usually at the heart of it. A tsundere is often confident, competitive and fiercely independent, so admitting that they care feels like losing. Over the course of a story the balance shifts: the insults soften into teasing, the denials become less convincing and the "dere" moments grow more frequent — exactly the arc fans love to watch.
Key Tsundere traits
Prickly exterior
Sharp remarks and a quick temper keep others at arm's length.
Denial
"It's not like I did it for you!" is the classic line.
Proud and competitive
They hate losing and hate admitting weakness even more.
Easily embarrassed
Compliments or being caught caring make them blush and lash out.
Secretly caring
They help, protect and worry, usually when they think no one sees.
Honest under pressure
In serious moments the tough act drops and their true feelings show.
How a tsundere shows affection
A tsundere shows affection indirectly, then denies it. They might make you lunch and insist they made too much, or show up to help and claim they were just passing by. Teasing, bickering and mock insults are often a sign that they are paying close attention to you.
The "dere" side appears in unguarded moments: when you are hurt, when someone else threatens you, or when they are too tired or too moved to keep up the act. Over time a tsundere drops the defenses more often, and their eventual honest confession tends to be one of the biggest payoffs in their story.
