What is a genki character?
Unlike most dere types, genki is not built on the word "dere" at all. It comes from the everyday Japanese word genki, familiar from greetings like "genki desu ka?" (how are you?), and describes someone full of life. In anime, the genki character is the one who bursts into the room, talks a mile a minute and treats every plan as an adventure.
Genki characters are the engine of many ensemble casts. They come up with the wild schemes, pull quieter characters out of their shells and keep the mood up when things go wrong. Their energy can be exhausting for the people around them, but it is also infectious — and behind the noise there is usually a sincere wish for everyone to have fun together.
Key Genki traits
Boundless energy
They are always moving, talking or starting something new.
Optimistic
Setbacks are just the start of the next attempt.
Curious
New places, hobbies and ideas excite them instantly.
Loud and expressive
Big voices, big gestures and big reactions.
Spontaneous
Plans change on a whim, usually to something more exciting.
Motivating
They pull friends into adventures and cheer them on.
How a genki character shows affection
A genki character shows affection by including you in everything. They drag you to festivals, invite you on spontaneous trips, text you the moment something exciting happens and expect you to be just as thrilled. Wanting you along for the ride is their way of saying you are important.
When they fall for someone, genki characters rarely hide it for long. Their feelings come out in bursts of enthusiasm, playful teasing and constant attention. Underneath the noise they are often surprisingly perceptive, and they will use all that energy to cheer you up when you are down.
